Reconstruction: What Would You Do?

The Union has won the war and now it is time to rebuild the Nation. You have been reading about plans put forth to make this happen. What would you do in an effort to rebuild/reconstruct the Nation? Is there a program you would put in place for freed slaves? Would you rewrite the entire constitution? Talk about a plan that you would implement.

  2. I would use the constitution to say to the south that the constitution says live liberty and the pursuit of happiness and the founding fathers thought that slavery was wrong and I would make a group for african americans that would give them jobs and money and homes also food and water

  3. I would do what President Lincoln was planning to do, except I'd do some of my own stuff. First of all, I would probably allow slave owners to keep their slaves, but have slaves work for a reasonable pay, so they wouldn't be slaves anymore. By reasonable, I mean above minimum wage. Payed slaves would live with their bosses until they had enough money to live off, then they could continue working with their owners or find a different job. I would then focus on Southern states swearing loyalty to the Union and voting for the 13th Amendment. I might've made a few small changes to the constitution, like a law about loyalty to the Union, but I wouldn't rewrite the whole constitution.

    2. I agree with you about having the slaves get payed, but who would monitor when and how much each owner is getting payed? Also, when the slaves are done working for their owner and get a job, won't segregation start?

    3. I think it would be a good idea to provide slaves with a job as soon as they were freed, but no, the slaves would not be forced to work for their owners. That's something to think about, monitoring how much the slaves get paid for how much work, and I am aware that segregation would pop up. There was really nothing anyone could do about segregation except speak up about and try to end it.

  5. I would give every slave a job and I will also give them enough food and water to last a while because I don't have enough for all of the slaves. I would go to rich people's houses and ask for money for the slaves.

  6. I would give slaves jobs like teaching and being in government. I would also give them all the supplies they would need. They could have a choice of getting paid to help rebuild the south. I would let the south back into the union if they would follow the union's laws. I might make some minor tweaks to the constitution but no major changes.

I would just add a few amendments to the constitution about slaves being treated equally and fairly, so no more slave haters.

  9. If I could live then, to reconstruct the south, I would hire the homeless unemployed slaves to work for pay to start rebuilding the south economically and physically. This would get a jump start on rebuilding the south, and as a plus, the slaves start off with money while looking for a job.

  11. if i could reconstruct the Nation then what i would do is get the slaves that are jobless to work (if they want to ) and split up the group of people that helping it to smaller-ish groups and put them in the places that need the most help. Splitting the people up will make the building process go a lot faster then it would if one big group of people worked on one town at a time.

    1. Putting a mark on a "slave" could be good but not needed. Wouldn't every "slave" be free already? Also putting a mark on the "slaves" would be abusive, because any mark could be hurtful. Since they are free, they don't need to be identified. They could be good because that can make sure plantation owners don't try to take the former "slaves" back into slavery.

  24. I would set up a volunteer group to go to the plantations and free the slaves. Then the slaves would get a second chance at life and go to a small town I set up, in the north. There the freed slaves could go to school, tend to a community garden, and soon be able to move and get jobs. The town will only be temporary and have enough resources that they would need until educated enough to get their own job.

  25. To rebuild the nation, I would recruit freed slaves and those who had lost their jobs to work for the good of the country. In their work, they would gather supplies, such as timber, and begin to build knew homes. For pay, they would receive some land and supplies for themselves. I would not relight the constitution, because that would offend our Founding Fathers. However, I would add some new amendments. Additionally, I would give all southerners a chance to reenter the Union, and those who did not would have to leave the country. This would form a whole country once more.

  27. For part of my plan, I would make plantation owners split equal amounts of their land to ALL of their slaves because the "slaves" tended to the land and know what to do. They might've worked on it with no pay their whole life, so at least they would get what they worked on and earn money from that land. Another part of my plan is that the South had to allow all their slaves the choice to be free or work on the plantation with PAY. The next part would be that the South would get $1000 to each family to start off until they can earn some money themselves. The last part would be that the federal government reconstructed the South for NO pay because the southerners didn't have a lot of money, and if people started to borrow money, debts will start to pile up.

Second, I would try my best to reconstruct all of the homes and buildings destroyed during the war so people would have a place to live again. Third, I would get the south to join the Union again and become a whole country again. The next thing I would do is get all of the slaves a job and land. Lastly I would make all citizens of the South swear an oath of loyalty to the Union. I do not think I would do any changes to the Constitution.

  33. I think that people could make paper money to give slaves and people that have lost their homes and valuable items. This would help economy. To make sure slavery/segregation wouldn't happen, about 90% of the former slave owners would have to swear loyalty to the south. I would make a law to make sure nothing could stop "colored" people from voting. The slaves would be given extra land from the plantations that they worked on because they helped with that land. The government would pay for it. After all, the former Confederates had their property destroyed. The South would take part of economy to get money. With this rate, economy would rise, so the United States would develop very, very quickly.

And since the U.S.A had just reunited, the North could spread their business and it would give jobs to the new free people. Also NWoL would build better homes for slaves, and, they would make agreements with slave owners that let slaves take half of their property and then they share it with other recently new freed slaves. Also we would go plantation by plantation making sure there are no slaves working and if there were, we would tell the Government and the slaves would be free. And if there might be need for any riots, Protests, or other things with slight violence we would join in.

  40. Following the Civil War, the United States of America was divided and needed to be united. While tensions ceased after the Union victory, and further disagreements between the North and South were no longer as frequent, the country was still in a state of disrepair. The government was in need of a new plan to fix America.
If I could write a new constitution, I would start over fresh. Instead of trying to build around what was already written, I would simply start over and write a new constitution, keeping in a few key points from the previous constitution. In an effort to rebuild the nation, I would strictly make sure that nobody from opposing sides was continuing to verbally or physically attack each other. In addition to prevent conspiracies or another war, I would do what Lincoln suggested and restrict Confederate states from joining America again unless they swore loyalty to the Union.
In regards to slavery, I would pretty much support the 13th amendment. The United States was, and still is, no place for slavery or racial prejudice. It is supposed to be a country with equal rights for all people (although further equality would come later, after the Reconstruction period). However, seeing as making slavery illegal would force a change of lifestyle and create more problems within the country, I would not immediately adopt the 13th amendment. I would first start with the most important laws, such as ones in which all slaves must be paid at least minimum wage, be provided housing, and recieve ample food. Slaves would also be able to leave work. As time went on, I would slowly improve the living conditions of workers - no longer slaves - until there was equality for all American citizens.

    1. In addition, I would focus on the reconstruction of railroads due to the importance of them in the United States economy. Railroads were significant to the economy in southern states due to the mass production of cotton because of the invention of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney. Hospitals would also be important to rebuild because a recovering nation needs to care for and help its citizens too. Therefore, rebuilding America relied on physical location being reconstructed also, not just political ideas.

I also would have the southern states ratify the 13th amendment to join the Union, just like President Abraham Lincoln did. I would have also made should that "Black Codes" did't come to effect.

  75. I would create a society that would take in freed slaves and people who suffered in the war.In it there would be a school and I would also provide them with basic needs, such as food.I would try to have as many as possible,so that I could help as many people as possible. And whenever someone wanted to leave I would let them.

  76. For my reconstruction, I would give everybody, even slaves, food and water to get them back into healthy shape. Secondly, I would build a school for freed slaves, where they would be treated as real human beings. Lastly, I would build the city back up, with many people helping, so then the nation will be habitable after damage has struck.

  78. I would create a homeless shelter so that slaves could stay there. I would provide food, shelter, and clothing. I would only ask for a small price, one that a formor slave could afford. I would sorta own a apartment building except provide more services. I would also try to help rebuild the city. That is how I would help after the civil war.

  79. About jobs-

Not every former śłàvè ćôûłd gët å jōb. There are too much of them.

    Think about it…

About 100,000 slaves were transported from Africa. That is almost as much people back then! You'd need about 75,000 jobs (not including children). That is just crazy. Having 75,000 jobs is expensive. This would take almost as much money as they had back then!

Sorry to ruin it, but Reconstruction was much harder than you think it is. Wouldn't they give jobs to them if they could?

  81. After the war, I would provide the slaves with food, water and shelter. Also, some schools would be nice for them so they can learn how to READ AND WRITE!!!!!!! But at the same time I wouldn't change the amendments. Everything need to be equal and fair!

  83. I would re-build the cities that were ruined during the war. Then I would set up a center where freed slaves could receive clothes and money to start a new life.

  84. I think that the Civil war wax museum was extremely awesome. I love the idea and I think it was great, thank Ms. Hall and some parents. But I had few problems with some rude and nonconsiderate students. My main problem that really affected me was that a group of kids came and started insulting me and then KICKED ME IN THE SHIN which really hurt and then I said my speech about 7 times to that group and in the middle of my 8th they left to torture someone else. But the rest of the Kids just left in the middle of my speech. I understand them leaving because they can get really bored, I remembered when I was in 3rd grade I think i skipped a few. But the rest was really good because we got to teach younger kids for 5th grade and all the work behind that was fun but a little time consuming. But in the museum some guys didn't have theirs memorized which Kinda embarrassed me. Also the parents and teachers really appreciated us. It was a wonderful idea.
