If not war then what?

What could have been done to prevent the Civil War? Think about an agreement that would have made sense. If you feel the war was necessary explain your answer.
Assignment due this Wednesday (October 7th).

  1. I bet that country leaders probably could've just talked this out. If Congress passed that many compromises and fair laws (Missouri Compromise, etc.) you would think that they would be able to figure out the issue of slavery too. I bet Congress could've done something like the "Reduce but not Destroy" act or something along those lines, setting a limit on how many slaves people could own. If the North wanted to completely get rid of slavery, they could make speeches in the South and make peaceful attempts to abolish slavery. The Civil War wasn't necessary, no war ever is.

    1. I think the leaders already tried to talk it out in their meetings. Also, some wars are necessary like the American Revolution. If we didn't have the american revolution, we wouldn't be talking about the civil war.

    3. One way that may have prevented the Civil war is a limit of 100-500 slaves in each state. Another way is that the southerners would have had to pay a tax for "their" slaves. The last way is if a state had a lot of slaves, they couldn't get any more.

  3. I think that there should not have been a war because it really effected families because the men would have to go to war and the families were left with no dad as you would call it. Then they totally did it for bad reasons because they could have come up with a agreement not a war. So no the war was a bad idea to do. NO WARS!!!!

  4. i think that the people could have worked it out. they could have talked it out, like had a big meeting with some people, (that the leaders pick from the northern states and the southern states) and talk about why they thought what they thought. the northern states could have talked about why they thought that slaves should not be allowed. the southern states could have talked about why they thought that slaves should be allowed.

  8. I do not think the war was necessary because of all the bloodshed and death. The civil war would end up the bloodiest war the Americans have ever fought. The United States should have settled an equal agreement between the North and the South. The South should make an agreement such as slaves could be paid, given food, water, and shelter. As the 8th Amendment states, "cruel and unusual punishment or fines shall not be allowed". Slaves must not be allowed to escape but could not be whipped or injured.

    1. I hadn't though about it that way. Great thinking! ;) I think that the slave owners didn't pay attention to that law. Also, the 8th Amendment states that "cruel or unusual punishments or fines shall not be allowed" for Americans. I'm pretty sure that would also go for the slaves. Slave owners were very dumb for not paying attention to that.

  9. I think they could have solved with a debate or something peaceful like that. They could have chosen 5 people from both sides and have 5 debates. Whoever won the most debates won the civil debate(named after the civil war). That would have been A LOT more peaceful. Or they could have just made an agreement and get it ALL over with. They all just didn't like each other pretty much. :) :) :) :)

  11. I think the Congress could have talked it out. I like the people in the south could only have a certain number of slaves, and the north could try to find a way to make a machine to do the harvesting for them.[ Tractors, etc.]

  12. I think the war was necessary because all people can learn from fights and all friendships have rocky beginnings, like countries. If the war never happened then it is likely we would be living in a corrupted country like in Africa, where poverty reigns supreme. Today we would most likely be owning slaves, or not. If you don't fight, you're not human. If you think everyone can get by on world peace, then when you meet the real world you'll find that rarely things go your way, and when they do, something bad happens right after that. Fighting is inputted into all human's genetic code, and no one can change that

  13. My agreement is that if you are a slave state you should treat your slaves like humans or pay a fine of 1,000,000 dollars. If you don't have enough money then you will have to learn how to treat slaves like humans. As far rich people, you can own slaves but since you do, not only do you have to pay, but half of the food your slaves harvest should go to the slaves. Also seceding is not allowed. You may give your state a new name and form a colony but the state must stay a part of the US of A. However, if you choose to secede anyway you have to pay monthly fines until you join the nation again.

  14. i think that the north and south could have solved this problem peacefuly. they could have a debate. they could have a court section. someone from the south could defend them and someone from the north could defend them.

  26. I think that both THE NORTH AND THE SOUTH should have not done any revolts just protests because when they did revolts the other side did another to pay them back quickly leading to war. It was also the Congress and judicial branches fault. Because the congress kept making unfair laws and the supreme court because they made very unfair cases like Dred Scot v. Stanford that made the north very mad. Also leading to war, I don't think the war was necessary.

I personally think that the war was not necessary, because since the North wanted to ban slavery, that should have happened. But, the South needed the slaves for their work to be done, but what they wanted more were state rights. So, the South could have their REASONABLE state rights and the North could get the law that slavery was legal abolished, now everyone could be happy.

  38. I think that when Europeans first came to America they shouldn't have enslaved the Native Americans. Then, they shouldn't have done the Triangular Trade and captured Africans. They stuck there nose into a matter that didn't even concern them. All of their horrible actions added up and they "fell in love" with slavery. If the Europeans hadn't enslaved people in the first place, then nobody would care about slavery. Slavery would be completely disregarded. Eventually, the North (Union) became more industrial, didn't need slavery, and banned it. But the South still valued it, which was one of the main reasons of the Civil War. :c

  39. I think that it was not necessary for the civil war to happen. First many lives were gone, families crying and could have been the bloodiest war like someone said earlier. Next the reasons weren't the best reasons to go to war. I know the North wanted to abolish slavery but when the North won slavery continued. They could of had many meetings and agreed on something. But know that I think about it, they probably be had a THOUSANDS of meetings.

  41. I think Congress should have talked about making a law making this illegal. Like they should have made a law saying it was illegal to make African Americans slaves. It also should have said that any slaves (Just born into slavery or slaves at the time.) would be free. -Mia Cabral :)

  42. I think that the war was not necessary, and also all other wars. I think that they could just have a peaceful debate where the few highest government people or VIPs would debate over should we have slavery or should we not.It should also be held in a public place so that lots of people could attend. They would each defend their side peacefully and state their opinion about slavery. Then, after the debate, hopefully changing people's minds, the US citizens would get a chance to VOTE and see if more people would want slavery or have slavery become illegal. Depending on the number of votes it would be determined if we would have slavery in the US. (I can see that maybe the slaves would not have gotten free right away since the debating would be happening in small areas at a time. Maybe they should consider making a LAW requiring everyone to set their slaves free.)
If we had a debate, not a war, not many people would have died. Also, America wouldn't be so violent after all.

  43. Ok, so sorry about this last second comment. I think the war could have been prevented. First of all we could've maybe had a meeting like when the Founding Fathers created the Declaration of Independence. The debate could be held w/ the two different presidents Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln and other government officials. They could sort it out peacefully instead of killing all those 620,000 American soldiers.
