  1. Ulysses s. grant was a major union general. He contributed by wining battles and helping the war effort. He helped in important battles like the battle of vicksburg. So without him helping the war could have been much more difficult.

  2. John Brown greatly contributed to the cicil war. Brown attacked five southerners as known as the massacre of "Bleeding Kansas". John Brown also planned to raid an army arsenal in Harpers Ferry, Virginia on October 16, 1859. In fact, 156 years to the day yesterday, Brown was caught 2 days later. Brown was convicted of treason and hanged.

  3. Robert E. Lee was an important person in the war. He served as a military officer in the U.S. army. He was also a West Point commandant and a legendary general of the confederate army during the Civil War. Lee and his army had many achievements, but sadly he died in Lexington from heart disease on October 12, 1870 #Lucy Adams

  4. Abraham had a very important contribution. "Abe won the 'Election of 1812". Although this was a contribution it was also a very important cause of the civil war because the Confederate States of America thought they were in big trouble because the union had the president on there side. Then, they elected their own president who was Jefferson Davis so then they were not in a ton of trouble because they had their own president.

  9. Robert E. Lee was born in 1807 to a revolutionary war hero. he trained at west point military academy and during the civil war, he had strong ties and emotions toward the union, and had negative feelings toward slavery. throughout the civil war, he won many battles, however on April 9,1865 he surrendered to general grant at the Appomattox court house. he died and is buried in Virginia.

  15. I think Christopher Columbus. You might be thinking him? Yeah him Christopher Columbus. If it wasn't for him we would not have slavery, he was the person that started bringing slaves to America and they were all African Americans and natives like the slaves we know of, if it wasn't for him we wouldn't have any fights and it would all be perfect. Columbus also started selling slaves like they did long ago. Also if you think about it the state rights were mainly about slavery so slavery was the cause to many causes that led to war. Christopher was a very important person that started the main cause of the civil war.

    1. Sorry I did not get to the main point his life. Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in the Republic of Genoa, Italy. He grew up wanting to explore the world. When he was old enough he asked many kingdoms around but none agreed to pay him to find what was on the other side of the pacific ocean. His first voyage into the Atlantic Ocean in 1476 cost him a lot after being approved by Spain after begging for many years. In 1492, Columbus left Spain in the Santa Maria, with the Pinta and thealong side. He has been credited for opening up the Americas to European colonization.Columbus participated in several other expeditions to Africa. He later took 3 more expeditions while he was forcing slaves to find gold for him and any other rare or valuable material.

  16. I think Major General George Pickett was very important. He was very important because he was the one who made the Union win the Battle of Gettysburg. That battle was the turning point of the war. This is what happened. Union Major General George Mead had troops positioned at Cemetery Ridge. Pickett and his troops marched out of covered land and charged across a wide expanse of open field. The Union troops shot them down easily. This is why the Union won the Battle of Gettysburg(the turning point in the war)and this is also why I think that Major General George Pickett was very important in the civil war.

  17. Harriet Bleacher Stowe was a very important person in the civil war because she wrote a famous book. The book was called Uncle Tom's Cabin. The book was about how awful slavery really was.Since she wrote the book people started to realize about how awful slavery really was. This is one of the causes of the civil war because the people who believed in slavery had conflict with the people that thought slavery is terrible. the people who were against slavery were called The Union and the people who thought slavery was good were the Confederacy. The Confederacy believed in having slaves so much that they shot the battle at Fort Sumter. The battle at Fort Sumter was the official start of the Civil war.

  19. Stonewall Jackson had a big impact on the Civil War. He was the confederate general during the civil war. Jackson was the best known confederate commander after Robert E. Lee. May 2, 1863 Confederate pickets accidentally shot him at the battle of Chancellorsville he survived the amputation of his arm but died of Pneumonia eight days later. This was a major set back for the Confederate.

  20. Harriet Tubman-
Harriet Tubman was one of the most remarkable women in american history. She was a bondwomen who escaped slavery in the South to be an abolitionist before the civil war. But before she ran away she was whipped many times and hit with a lead weight and that caused her to have narcolepsy for the rest of her life. Even though the narcolepsy caused her trouble her passion to be an abolitionist continued. Later on in her life she lead over 300 slaves through The Underground Railroad.

  21. I think Harrit Tubman because she was the one to help many slaves survive getting through the Underground Railroad. She was once enslaved but escaped to the North and once she was safe she realized that she should help the other slaves. Remember that she was not the only one who did this but some of the others were caught and been killed or whipped.

  22. Harriet Beecher Stowe. Harriet wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin. this book changed many lives. Many people were now against slavery. People thought slavery was just the greatest thing in the world. 23. A few years ago I read or heard somewhere about some guy named Robert Purvis. I did not recognize him so I “Googled” him. I am writing about him because I think that he has an interesting background.
Robert Purvis was an anti-slavery activist, meaning he did not want slavery, mostly because he was a free mixed race man.He was born in Charleston, SC. In 1833, Purvis helped abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison establish the American Anti-Slavery Society Philadelphia, signing its "Declaration of Sentiments," and also the Library Company of Black People. He gave lots of lectures and organized abolitionist groups aimed at helping free blacks' civil rights. Between 1845 and 1850, Purvis served as president of the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society, and from 1852 to 1857, he was the leader of the General Vigilance Committee which provided direct assistance to runaway slaves.
He was not only against slavery. He also served as the first vice president of the Woman's Suffrage Society, and supported the drive to limit the availability of alcohol. It might just be me, but I think that Robert Purvis should be recognized by more people.

  27. I think it is a bit of Harriet Beecher Stowe because when he wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin it got the slave owners mad because the book told the deep secrets about slavery. Then the northerners found out and most did not believe in slavery so then they then wanted the owners to stop. Slave owners got so mad because they had big land and big cash crop and they thought oh why should we do the "farm". I think it was a bit of Harriet Beecher Stowe who caused the civil war from Uncle Tom's Cabin.

  35. I think that Confederate Horace L. Hunley was an important figure that contributed to the Civil War. I think this because he invented a submarine that was intended to sink warships. He named one of his submarines, 'CSS H.L. Hunley'(basically his name) and in February of 1864, he used it to sink the USS Housatonic near the Port of Charleston. But too bad that after the attack, the CSS H.L. Hunley also sank. During the powerful blast that it pushed out, it probably got damaged by the blast. If the submarine was maybe better constructed, this may not have happened. Who knows?
    ~Coco L.
P.S. I don't even think Hunley could have better constructed the submarine because back then, weren't they just discovering new materials?

  51. I think a really important person in the war was Winfield Scott, who proposed the Anaconda Plan. He had a lot of trouble making Union commanders think that it was a good idea, but eventually he did. The Anaconda Plan would eventually end the war with (hopefully, but it didn't happen) minimal casualties. It would cut of the south's trade (because they didn't have any factories) of ammunition, gunpowder, guns, etc. from Great Britain and countries like that. Without Winfield Scott, the war either would have taken over twice as long, or the Confederates might have won the war, and then we might still have slaves today and large amounts of racism that wouldn't have been considered racist, and everybody knows that we wouldn't want to live in that kind of world. :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

His family was poor and he was fatherless at a young age, so he tried to change his lifestyle. He served as a soldier in the in the War of 1812. He was still a soldier, but was making his way up during the Mexican-American War. During the civil war, he finally became a general and devised the Anaconda Plan. The plan was to blockade southern ports, take control of the Mississippi River to block supplies, and invade the South. They would invade the South squeezing the region from east and west like an anaconda squeezing it's prey.

  70. I think that John Brown was a very important person in the Civil War. In 1859 he tried start a revolt among enslaved people. Brown planned to attack an army arsenal in Harpers Ferry, Virgina. John brown was a conductor on the Underground Railroad and planned to give weapons to enslaved people who he believed would rise up against plantation owners. John Brown was very important!

  71. I think that Abraham Linclon was really important. He was one of the only candidates that wanted to abolish slavery. He was also someone who helped the Union to win the Civil War.

  75. John Brown I think about John brown I think you sort of a good guy and bad guy because he tried to kill all the people that had slaves working for them. But on the other hand here he was trying to free all the slaves. What do you think about John Brown do you think he's a good guy or a really bad guy. Monserrat N.

  76. Clara Barton was important because she helped the wounded soldiers. She got to work on the front lines and bring bandages and stuff to help out the soldiers. After the war she started the Red Cross.

  77. Ulysses S. Grant was an important figure in the Civil War and reconstruction after the war. He was the General of one of the Union armies. Robert E. Lee surrendered to him at Appomattox Courthouse. At the surrender, Grant treated Lee with dignity and allowed Lee's men to keep their horses and arms if they surrendered. This allowed the southern men to go home to their farms and rebuild them. Because he treated Lee and his men with respect, he sent a message that was important to President Lincoln which was that the north and south has to rebuild the nation. This is why Grant was an important person in the Civil War and the period after the Civil War as well.
