  2. Unfortunately, the Reconstruction Act did not work because the Negroes did not get the rights that they should have gotten.

  3. Reconstruction kind of both worked an didn't. It had its strengths and weaknesses. First of all, Reconstruction started off working well and Abraham Lincoln had good plans to employ former slaves and rebuild the Union. However, Andrew Johnson, the third worst president of the United States, had bad ideas for Reconstruction, and kind of messed it all up. Southerners were not just going to change their opinions automatically and start treating former slaves like free citizens, and Andrew Johnson couldn't seem to figure that out. However, Congress was rebuilt and so were important buildings such as hospitals and railroads. In conclusion, I think that Reconstruction had strengths and weaknesses and worked in some cases, but didn't work in others.

  4. I also think it did not work because Lincons plan was to give the African Americans more rights by letting them vote and have their own house but Johnson did not want things to change.

  6. I think both but I mainly agree with Damian because they still were not treated fairly like not having certain jobs, they could not have land, they could not vote, and there was strong racism against blacks still. But later the south ended up being reconstructed either way and their is no more racism for blacks.

  8. It did not work because the Negroes got some laws then they lost them. The southerners were trying to make so the Negroes would become slaves again or have no rights or the terrorist groups would kill all Negroes. The Reconstruction failed because letting southerners run for office was mistake.they should of waited a little longer or, not have let southerners run for office.

  12. It worked for rebuilding the south but not as much for slaves they still had limited rights (hardly any) still. They could not vote, own some types of property, some even were not allowed to work on some jobs, others could not live in specific places. Also reconstruction was working well until Andrew Johnson came in he was for the south but since Congress was rebuilt they helped reconstruction but still Andrew ruined it. Bu then Ulysses Grant became president and the south got rebuilt. But with the help of people that wanted to reunite again. Some Northerners even wanted to take some slave owners land and give them to slaves. But the slaves were still in trouble with JIm Crow laws and black codes.

  13. I think the reconstrusction did indeed work at the end 'blacks' were free and by the end of that time the south re-joined the north, and the passages on the 13,14 and the 15th amendmentes were extremley meaningful and brought sucess to this country today and ended future conflicts, but freedom enterd sharecropping and many more

  14. It did work because negros were they were out of slaver they thougt but right when they got back they had to find a job and if they act up the owner can beat you. African americas get the most volice out of every one even some poor white people can get beat and get hurt as well. Recstursion did work in those years it happened .

  16. It sort of worked because negroes were not slaves. They had black codes, which was basically slavery. When Lincoln was assassinated Andrew Johnson became the new president, he was a southerner and did not like Lincoln's idea of Freedman's Bureau. So reconstructing the south did not really work.

  17. I think the reconstruction did not work because the African Americans were still not treated equally. In the crash course it stated that the Civil rights movement was also called the Second reconstruction. The crash course also stated that after President Lincoln was assassinated congress made black codes. They limited the rights of African Americans. One black code stated that African Americans had to work for a white person, which basically means slavery. Things were just like they were before the Civil war. But the 14th Amendment did protect the right of African Americans. Although reconstruction worked for rebuilding the South.

  18. I belive that the reconstruction act did not work. I think that it did not work because the "negros" were still not treated equally. In the crash course it stated that that there were two reconstructions. The crash course also stated that after lincoln's assassination congress passed the black codes. The black codes limited the rights of african americans. after the black code were passed the 14th amendment was passed and it did protect the rights of the african americans. in the end the south was reconstructed.

  19. The Reconstruction both worked and didn't. It was all going fine when Abraham Lincoln started fixing everything, but he was assassinated. Andrew Johnson became president who was the third worst president and racist. Northern Soldiers were making sure African Americans could vote but this was taken away by black codes. "Black Codes" were being issued to limit the rights of African American people, and Andrew Johnson did nothing to try to stop this. They did started creating institutions for Black People. The 13th Amendment was ratified that stated that Nobody could ever own slaves. Slavery did stop, but something similar to slavery called "share-cropping" started issuing. Share-cropping was when a person ( usually an African American) planted many crops. They would give it to there "Employer", (master) and he would give them a small percentage of the crop and he would keep the rest. Congress tried to impeach Johnson, but sadly didn't. Although, during the re-election Andrew Johnson was as worthy to keep presidency as a sloppy pig in the mud, so the Republican he ran against former Union General Ulysses S. Grant won. He started steering the U.S. in the right direction. He slowly started stopping the black codes. Terrorization started happening in the U.S. Big groups like the Ku Klux Klan (founded by former Confederate Officers) and other terrorized African Americans, former slaves and Republicans, both black and white. Rutherford B. Hayes became president after that. He helped ratify the 14th Amendment which stated that anyone born in the U.S. was officially a U.S. citizen. It also stated that nobody can deny life, liberty, and justice to any person. Finally this document stated that you cannot deny the equal protection of laws as any other person. So Overall I think that Reconstruction could have gone better, but it mostly worked out because of the 13th and 14 Amendments.

  23. In my opinion the reconstruction did not work one part of the reconstruction was supposed to be that all slaves would be free people, but African Americans still weren't treated with respect. One example of African Americans not being treated equally is black codes these codes limited the rights of African Americans. Another setback was after Lincoln got assassinated President Johnson became president and he thought that no rights should be given to slaves and he didn't like Lincolns plan for the reconstruction of the south so it made a major setback for putting the country back together again. As a result I do not think that the reconstruction of the south worked.

  27. I think reconstruction worked a little bit beacause eventually states had the right of rights. Also, it let slaves be free, and eventually vote. Some were even law afficials. But there were black codes that pretty much said that slaves still barely have any freedoms. Gosh Jhonson was a terrible president! I still feel that we could have done much better. And ofcourse we had Jim Crow laws (segragation which is also terrible). But I feel that we could have done better.

  29. I think that reconstruction wasn't a TOTAL failure. I mean, we did create the 13th through 15th amendment, which helped progress through giving equal rights to all US citizens. But, as a president, Andrew Johnson just tried to drag the US into what was pretty much slavery all over again. For example, freed african americans still had to work for previous slaveowners, but this time, they got less than half of the produce they worked for compared to getting none at all, which isn't much of a change considering that both times they didn't really have a choice. But, reconstructioneers, (not a real word, but what I call people who tried to reconstruct the US) who created the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment, also went on to pave the path for african americans to hold office. If you think about it, without the reconstruction, there might have never have been the 13th through 15th amendment. That also means - a bone-chilling thought - there never would have been integration like there is today. At the best, without reconstruction, the idea of integration might have come as late as 50 YEARS LATER - IN 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Reconstruction didn't work as well as it needed to. It would have really worked if Abraham Lincoln wasn't assassinated and if Republican officials had more money and effort. Reconstruction was supposed to get rid of slavery and segregation completely. When he was assented, his vice president(Johnson) took over. The crash course told us that he approved of black codes. He did not like giving African Americans equal rights. In truth, reconstruction wasn't technically finished until the 1960's, when segregation ended.

  33. I think it did work at first and it did happen so. It could have been done better though. Andrew Johnson was a major set back. With the veto, just WOW. denying rights, he just was a real problem. Though, eventually reconstruction ended as a success, just took longer than it needed to.

  34. I believe reconstruction worked and did not work. It did eventually allow all men to vote. Slaves were free. African americans even began to work as law officials. Some became governors, and others join the Senate and the House Of Representatives. Their were about 2,000 african americans who then participated in office. Black codes prevented african americans from having jobs and limited their mobility. On top of this, president Andrew Jackson was not helping things at all when he took over. Jim Crow Laws publicly limited the rights of african americans. Honestly, I do not think reconstruction really helped because segregation would be going on till the 20th century.

  35. I think the Reconstruction did not work because of President Johnson, not making the right decisions. He did not lead the country to freedom for the slaves and all the other people in the south who had to rebuild and fix their homes, their towns, and their cities. Also, the Ku Klux Klan was stopping the African Americans from voting by adding poll taxes for them to pay. Then there was black codes that would limit African Americans rights. These are my reasons that the reconstruction did not work. Dillon

  37. I think reconstruction had it's ups and downs, but overall,I believe that it did work. Every thing was running smoothly, then Lincoln got assassinated and Johnson became president. Luckily, Congress was able to override him.a "down" was that freed slaves were still treated like slaves. Only much later were the 13th,14th,and 15th amendments adopted. Another good thing that happened in the process of reconstruction was that the Union and the Confederacy were able to reunite and form one country. But the reason I think reconstruction worked is because, presently, the United States is in a much better state that it was right after the Civil War.

For example the Freemend Baru.It helped in so many ways!If we did not have it there would be a longer time period before all Americans had education. But unfortunately we had a rasit president and black codes were enforced. We would have reconstruction go a lot smother if we had Lincon in charge. But you can blame Booth (Lincon's assassin)for that. There is lot more things that went wrong with reconstruction but this the out line of it. And actually I change my answer Reconstruction failed:(

  39. I think reconstruction failed terribly and it even said that in the crash course. I think that the Freedmens Bureau helped some but then Johnson became president because Lincon was assassinated and it was discontinued. Then they started implementing Jim Crow laws and black codes which were very bad and prohibited rights of African Americans given to them by the constitution. It also said in the crash course that Johnson and congress were fighting and could get nothing done. Johnson was racist and was doing bad stuff and I was thinking in class today that Lincon most likely would not have liked what he did. And groups like the Ku Klutz Klan would prevent African Americans from voting, until they sent federal troops to stop KKK action. It also stated in the crash course that democrats overcame the government and those republicans left became no longer interested in reconstruction. So to rap (I'm not a rapper :) ) it up, reconstruction failed terribly.

  40. I think that the reconstruction of the USA did not work because after they stopped trying to fix the USA. The white people on the South still did slavery or some type of slavery. This was called shared farming. Shared farming meant that the former slaves worked all day an the farm picking cotton or a crop and only got a little less than half the amount they picked. The rest went to the farmers whose land the negro picked all the crops on.

  41. I think that the Reconstruction of the south worked and didn't work. It didn't work because there were still many people that didn't have homes after this. These people had to work as sharecroppers and they would harvest foods for the people they worked for and they got a share of the amount of crops they harvested. Also there was still segregation and all of the "African Americans had to have owners", said Andrew Jackson. Though everything was rebuilt except for some people's homes I think that the Reconstruction of the South was indeed a failure.

  56. I think that reconstruction did work in a few ways but mostly and didn’t work. First, according to our textbook everything was going well, with Lincoln and all, helping slaves, building more railroads, ect. . But then Lincoln died and we were all stuck with Andrew Johnson, “the 3rd worst president,” says John Green, the crash course guy. Andrew Johnson sort of messed things up, and being a southerner did not help either. The way the Crash Course put it was that Johnson just changed a few words in documents making them sound better, but they were still slave codes. Some of the words that he changed were slaves to Negros and slave owner to employer. This did not make things better with slaves but made some of the southerners feel more comfortable. When reconstruction was starting to get better and look like reconstruction, segregation began. I mean I have heard about a water fountain painted white and a water fountain painted black, but a water fountain for different colored people is not right.
    -Sarah Prevost

  57. I believe that reconstruction failed. African Americans were still basically slaves. They had a type of economic slavery which African Americans grew crops, but gave 2 1/2 thirds to of the crop to their "owners". This as also called sharecroping. Also African Americans could not vote, travel freely, own some types of property, and much more because of Jim Crow laws and black codes. There was also segregation. This is not what Abraham Lincoln wanted. Andrew Jackson was not carrying on Abraham Licolns`s Legacy. African Americans were still treated wrong. In conclusion, reconstruction did not work.
    - Parker Pape

  58. i think that reconstruction wasn't the best. first off, it brought up the idea of sharecropping. that was pretty much slavery. it was when African Americans still had to work for white people. African Americans could own things, move out of the country, and other free things, only if the (owner) approved. sometimes, even white people were apart of sharecropping. also, in the reconstruction time, segregation happened. there were separate hotels, water fountains, and schools. last, many southerners were upset so they had protests with violence. other southerners fought to bring back African Americans to work for them (again sharecropping.)
the good outcomes of reconstruction was that African Americans could vote, legally marry, get education, sign contracts, own property, and hold in the political office. they could also form churches, schools, learn to read, and form organizations. there were some ups and downs in reconstruction...

  66. Reconstruction brought positive changes, but it did negatively influence the nation in many ways. I do believe that the reconstruction period was necessary to rebuild the nation due to the fact that if it had not been implemented, then it would cause the United States of America to continue living the way it had. The country would still be divided and falling apart.
Reconstruction worked in many ways. Slavery was, for the most part, illegalized and no longer able to happen. African Americans were officially given rights and protected by laws such as the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. But while it was true that they were legally protected, that did not mean that others could not break the law.
Andrew Johnson was reluctant to ban slavery, and he was especially unwilling to give African Americans the same rights as other white Americans, like the right to vote. In addition to the president passing as few protective laws as possible, he mostly turned a blind eye to violent groups opposing African American freedom. One of the most well-known and most hostile groups was known as the Klu Klux Klan, or KKK, was famous for its incredibly cruel and violent acts. In addition, reconstruction saw the rise of sharecropping. Technically, African Americans invovled in the sharecropping system were free. However, they were always in debt. The plantation owners were devious and clever, often trying to trick African Americans into being in debt for the rest of their lives. Once again, Andrew Johnson refused to admit that it was wrong. He definitely earned his place as the third worst president in the history of America.
Do I think that reconstruction achieved equality? No. Do I think it accomplished its goal? No. I don't think it did things correctly, but I do think that it was absolutely necessary. Sharecropping was like slavery, but outlawing slavery raised awareness of this. The Klu Klux Klan brutally murdered African Americans, but others rose to protect the victims. So, I do believe that reconstruction was an essential process in the rebuilding of America.

P.S. Sorry I was so late this time!! XP

  67. Reconstruction partly worked and partly did not because Abraham Lincoln was on the right track to make our nation a perfect place for African Americans(well, technically for all people)... ...Until Lincoln died and President Johnson got awarded with the presidency. President Andrew Johnson did not agree with Lincoln. He was racist and believed that negroes, as they were called, should not be allowed to do things like to vote. Johnson also supported the black codes and the Jim Crow Laws that were passed in the southern state governments. But, let's go back to Lincoln's plan for a moment. Today, we learned in class that the first step to Lincoln's plan was called the 10% plan. This meant that 10% of the voters needed to swear an oath of loyalty to the Union. The 10% plan failed when, of course, President Johnson took the presidency, but it did work for a while. Even so, the Ku Klux Klan tried to stop the former slaves to vote. In conclusion, basically the Reconstruction plan worked for a while, and then fell downwards when Johnson took over.

  68. I think it was because the north wanted the south to pay! I mean its good revenge and all but i think they should have thought about it like the south would just make the slaves do it..... :/ Its not honestly the best plan...............................................

  69. Reconstruction worked over time but for the first few years it was failing. One main reason it was failing was because Grant made the soldiers leave the South it was a catastrophe from there the K.K.K started and violence broke out.

  70. I think Reconstruction halfway worked and halfway didn't. It partially worked because Abraham Lincoln was doing quite well "sewing" the U.S. back together. His plan to do that was called the
10% plan. This plan stated that 10% of voters were to swear their loyalty to the Union. However, the plan fell apart when Lincoln was shot and killed by John Wilkes Booth. After that, black codes and Jim Crow Laws were enforced. And the KKK was formed to stop African American voters and politicians. They also targeted any politicians that believed slaves should be free.

  71. I think reconstruction worked until Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. After Lincoln died, I think reconstruction did not work. African Americans were still treated like slaves and they were treated unfairly. When president Johnson took over, every thing went down hill because he was thought differently of Abraham Lincoln. He supported Black Codes and things that treated African Americans differently and unfairly. Reconsruction worked until President Johnson took over.

  72. I think that reconstruction worked in the beginning and just kind of failed. Reconstruction worked until Abraham Lincoln died and Andrew Johnson took over. He did not want African Americans to have equal rights. Soon after the kkk came along and started using violence for African Americans not as people. The north never tried to stop it and reconstruction failed.

  73. I think reconstruction worked and didn't work. One reason it didn't work was because African Americans couldn't have the same rights as white people because of black codes. The rebuilding of the souther economy and the new ways of transportation did work. After Rutherford B Hayes became president, he took away all the union soldiers from the south and upheld the rights and freedoms of all Africans. By then, southern states gained control in state governments and allowed segregation in the south by making "Jim Crow Laws."

  74. Reconstruction went in many different directions. It worked, because everything was finally starting to get back into place and many new transportation options, etc.. Some ways it didn't work, was that there had been very many losses of loved ones which made it harder rebuilding without as many people helping. Another big problem, was that African Americans were made fun of ad teased, because whites believed to be more superior over blacks. Which led to segregation in the future.

  75. It worked because soldiers made sure that no one broke the rules but when they got taken away thats when things went downhill. Another thing that went down hill was the freed slaves they had no jobs or homes so they went to the same people who enslaved them for sharecropping.

  76. Reconstruction worked in some ways - slaves got their freedom and were supposed to be treated fairly, but after President Lincoln died a lot of the good ideas he had were not acted on.

  77. Reconstruction was a success but then everything flipped back around. African Americans were still being treated as if they were property. Owners started to beat them because they were in the government and were allowed to boss them around. The main reason was probably when Lincoln died. Reconstruction happened to fail.

  78. I think it did work and didn't work because as it said in the crash course, when Johnson became president new laws came in restricting African Americans from many things. But African Americans were freed from slavery. - Sophia S. :)

  79. I think that reconstruction worked and didn't work at the same time i think that afican americans were treated like people owned them and they didn't like that neither did Lincoln. When Lincoln died thats when reconstruction kinda tried to fail although it did. narelle

  80. i think reconstruction didn't work because it let slaves be free but they didn't have any money so they where wandering around the city. So they let the slaves rent out land and then farm on their and give it to the owner of the field and the owner would pay them and they had to rent the land. Which that was sort of like slavery. And during reconstruction there was the kkk which where people that went around scaring blacks so they wouldn't be able to use their new rights that they had for being free. one other thing that happened that was bad during the reconstruction was abraham lincoln got shot to death. now their where good things that happened during reconstruction like slaves being fee and being able to get a education. that was very important.
