The Union has won the war and now it is time to rebuild the Nation. You have been reading about plans put forth to make this happen. What would you do in an effort to rebuild/reconstruct the Nation? Is there a program you would put in place for freed slaves? Would you rewrite the entire constitution? Talk about a plan that you would implement.
I would not rewrite the whole constitusion. But, you know what i would do i would free slaves for every states also city.I would also rebuild and reconsturcted the nation also if they had a war i would build every thing new if every thing was distroed.
ReplyDelete-ryan:)
I would use the constitution to say to the south that the constitution says live liberty and the pursuit of happiness and the founding fathers thought that slavery was wrong and I would make a group for african americans that would give them jobs and money and homes also food and water
ReplyDelete- harry
Actually, all founding fathers had slaves. Be careful what you write.
Delete-Damian Read
I would do what President Lincoln was planning to do, except I'd do some of my own stuff. First of all, I would probably allow slave owners to keep their slaves, but have slaves work for a reasonable pay, so they wouldn't be slaves anymore. By reasonable, I mean above minimum wage. Payed slaves would live with their bosses until they had enough money to live off, then they could continue working with their owners or find a different job. I would then focus on Southern states swearing loyalty to the Union and voting for the 13th Amendment. I might've made a few small changes to the constitution, like a law about loyalty to the Union, but I wouldn't rewrite the whole constitution.
ReplyDelete~Annabelle :D
But would the slaves have to work for there owners? I mean if I was a slave, I would want to stay as far away as I could from the person who treated me like an object.
DeleteI agree with you about having the slaves get payed, but who would monitor when and how much each owner is getting payed? Also, when the slaves are done working for their owner and get a job, won't segregation start?
Delete-Sarah Prevost
I think it would be a good idea to provide slaves with a job as soon as they were freed, but no, the slaves would not be forced to work for their owners. That's something to think about, monitoring how much the slaves get paid for how much work, and I am aware that segregation would pop up. There was really nothing anyone could do about segregation except speak up about and try to end it.
Delete~Annabelle :D
I would definitely ensure the slaves hade money to buy food, supplies, and water. I would supply free services too. I would keep the constitution as it is but add some amendments. I would call it th equal to all plan.
ReplyDelete-Jeffrey
I would give every slave a job and I will also give them enough food and water to last a while because I don't have enough for all of the slaves. I would go to rich people's houses and ask for money for the slaves.
ReplyDeleteSeba
ReplyDeleteI would give slaves jobs like teaching and being in government. I would also give them all the supplies they would need. They could have a choice of getting paid to help rebuild the south. I would let the south back into the union if they would follow the union's laws. I might make some minor tweaks to the constitution but no major changes.

DeleteStart completley new!If you wont treat every one as an equal you are banised!!!!!I know this is harsh but I would totally make this law.
ReplyDeleteRaina
I would help slaves and give the all the things you need to live like food, water, supplies, and shelter. I would also make sure slaves had jobs and were able to care for their family. I would just add a few amendments to the constitution about slaves being treated equally and fairly, so no more slave haters.
ReplyDeleteBrady
If I could live then, to reconstruct the south, I would hire the homeless unemployed slaves to work for pay to start rebuilding the south economically and physically. This would get a jump start on rebuilding the south, and as a plus, the slaves start off with money while looking for a job.
ReplyDeleteJacob (Jake)
Good job.I totally agree with you.
Delete-Jeffrey Hallett
Also, some of the the former slaves should help create laws. This would help laws being shaped by all sides of the country.
Delete-Damian Read
-Did you notice I wrote "the" twice?
if i were Lincoln i would say that slave owners should keep their slaves but they should be payed a reaonable price. the slaves would stay with the owners and they would work still but not as much as before. i would add one law that states that most of the loyalty would be given to the union. i would not change any thing else.
ReplyDeleteTORI WILLIAMS:)
if i could reconstruct the Nation then what i would do is get the slaves that are jobless to work (if they want to ) and split up the group of people that helping it to smaller-ish groups and put them in the places that need the most help. Splitting the people up will make the building process go a lot faster then it would if one big group of people worked on one town at a time.
ReplyDelete~Hannah~
I will start a program to give out food and supplies to those who help rebuild the nation.
ReplyDelete~Jamie
I would make many factorys, and give slaves a low cost education. I would also give slaves a job.
ReplyDeleteOne more thing i would do is find very smart people and try to get them to invent things. This would help are econemy a lot.
-IKE
ike well i would not make slaves pay a penny for what they been through they should be free no money needed except clothes shoes food they have to pay for that like all of us BUT NO MONEY FOR SCHOOL BECAUSE THEY COULDN'T SURVIVE WITHOUT SCHOOL THE WOULD BE HOMELESS NO HOME!!!!!
DeleteAlec Lozano [joel]
I would make a program for African Americans making sure they got the same amount of food and job options as Americans making america equal -Triston CT
ReplyDeleteI would make sure that slaves had food, water, shelter, clothing, and jobs. I would also make sure that everything that was destroyed in the wars would be rebuilt. I will also make sure/try to get every slave reunited with there families by asking all of the old slave owners where they got the slaves from and where they put the other family members when they separated them. Like Ike said I would also hire people to invent things. I would give them problems that were happening and they could try to invent something to help.
ReplyDelete-BELLA
i would like to keep my slaves alive so i would give them food and water

Deleteso what i would do i would give them shelter some clouths and water and try to get there wife and cild or childeren or husbend back they would be happy again and that would be good to see them happy again becase i like seeing pepole happy and i would do any thing for the slaves. -Anna
DeleteI would put in a slave community so slaves would not have to deal with people hurting them ever if a white came in and tried to take one of them from their community.
ReplyDeleteI would make system to let every body witch slaves were free by putting a mark on them .
ReplyDeleteasher
Putting a mark on a "slave" could be good but not needed. Wouldn't every "slave" be free already? Also putting a mark on the "slaves" would be abusive, because any mark could be hurtful. Since they are free, they don't need to be identified. They could be good because that can make sure plantation owners don't try to take the former "slaves" back into slavery.
Delete-Tina
I would first make a program to help slaves or plantation owners get their shelter, food , clothing, and a good and cheap education.i would start building new economizes , while reentering states into the union.i would finally get people to help with this.
ReplyDeleteconnor
I more than likely would re-write sections of the Constitution that people were not understanding back then. "All men are to be treated equally", obviously this meant to all people. But some people thought this meant that just white people, because back then they would think of different races not as people, but of animals.
ReplyDelete~Salter~
To reconstruct the United States, I would put up buildings to start economies. I would also add more amendments to the constitution to make sure slaves are banned for sure!!!
ReplyDelete~Emma L.
Did you mean "owning slaves" or "slavery" being banned, not slaves?, but I agree! I would also add not only a law but an amendment to the constitution stating that slavery is banned!!
Delete-Sarah Prevost
I would reconstruct the nation by doing similar to what Lincoln intended to do. First, I would free all slaves. Second, I would call all people who want to help rebuild the South and pay them a fair amount of money. Third, I would make the South swear swear an oath of loyalty to the Union in order to reenter the Union. Fourth, I would find a corporation(made-up name) called NAJFA(National African Job Finding Association) to get African Americans employed. And lastly, everybody would enjoy life.
ReplyDelete~Coco L.
i would not change the constitution and i would make buildings that has jobs for slaves so they don't have to pick cotton and they can do normal jobs.

DeleteI would not change the constitution. Of course, more amendments could be added to prevent segregation, but I do not believe a new constitution should have been made. I would start to rebuild homes and buildings. Farms should work to gather produce and help the economy. Everybody would work together to prevent slavery.
ReplyDelete-Cortney Klein
I would set up a volunteer group to go to the plantations and free the slaves. Then the slaves would get a second chance at life and go to a small town I set up, in the north. There the freed slaves could go to school, tend to a community garden, and soon be able to move and get jobs. The town will only be temporary and have enough resources that they would need until educated enough to get their own job.
ReplyDeleteI will also enforce laws saying that you had to treat freed slaves equally so that segregation would not start.
-Sarah Prevost
I might also set up a search group to help slaves retrace their family and get them back together. #family
Delete-Sarah Prevost
I will do similar things to what Lincon did, but in my own way. Also, I would have some of the slaves that educated themselves, work for the country for pay.
Delete-Sarah Prevost
To rebuild the nation, I would recruit freed slaves and those who had lost their jobs to work for the good of the country. In their work, they would gather supplies, such as timber, and begin to build knew homes. For pay, they would receive some land and supplies for themselves. I would not relight the constitution, because that would offend our Founding Fathers. However, I would add some new amendments. Additionally, I would give all southerners a chance to reenter the Union, and those who did not would have to leave the country. This would form a whole country once more.
ReplyDelete-Aisling
To Reconstruct a nation I would build schools for all slaves and help them learn to do normal jobs. I would clear the south of the ruins and start to rebuild the buildings and then the Economy. Like building them factories and teaching them how to work them.
ReplyDelete~ Roswell B.
For part of my plan, I would make plantation owners split equal amounts of their land to ALL of their slaves because the "slaves" tended to the land and know what to do. They might've worked on it with no pay their whole life, so at least they would get what they worked on and earn money from that land. Another part of my plan is that the South had to allow all their slaves the choice to be free or work on the plantation with PAY. The next part would be that the South would get $1000 to each family to start off until they can earn some money themselves. The last part would be that the federal government reconstructed the South for NO pay because the southerners didn't have a lot of money, and if people started to borrow money, debts will start to pile up.
ReplyDelete-Tina
If I were to try to help in reconstruction I would try to offer freedmen jobs.
ReplyDelete-Kadavy
I would make a document saying that freed slaves got enough money to buy a house and to buy food. Also I would make sure that they would have many job opportunities. -KMD
ReplyDeleteI would probably do something similar to what Lincon did. I would make the Confederates swear into the Union and make some sort of program to get newly freed people back on track. During this I would also have so military operatives stationed around in case anyone fealt the need to continue on with slavery or rebel against the Union.
ReplyDelete~~Will F.
Maybe there could be a book writing thing so old slaves could get some money from writing.
ReplyDelete-Harper
I would try to do something related to what Lincoln was intending to do. First, I would whatever it takes to get slaves free and not be treated as property but as people. Second, I would try my best to reconstruct all of the homes and buildings destroyed during the war so people would have a place to live again. Third, I would get the south to join the Union again and become a whole country again. The next thing I would do is get all of the slaves a job and land. Lastly I would make all citizens of the South swear an oath of loyalty to the Union. I do not think I would do any changes to the Constitution.
ReplyDelete- Hanna P.
I think that people could make paper money to give slaves and people that have lost their homes and valuable items. This would help economy. To make sure slavery/segregation wouldn't happen, about 90% of the former slave owners would have to swear loyalty to the south. I would make a law to make sure nothing could stop "colored" people from voting. The slaves would be given extra land from the plantations that they worked on because they helped with that land. The government would pay for it. After all, the former Confederates had their property destroyed. The South would take part of economy to get money. With this rate, economy would rise, so the United States would develop very, very quickly.
ReplyDelete-Damian Read
(Was this too long?)
Well if i was going to do something about the reconstruction i would build schools for african americans and i would make sure that they where never treated like slaves ever again i would make everyone equal i would make sure they didn't get poor so technically i would be getting them really good job enough to help them support them selves. but i cant get them jobs with no buildings so i will just build schools, hospitals, restaurants, stores, and new roads. every one will be happy and my creations will be a success!!!!
ReplyDeleteAlec lozano
I would make a program to make start on the reconstruction. Everyone would donate a little money to slaves so they can buy apartments. The constitution would stay the same except I may add a few little things.
ReplyDelete- Delaney:)
I think if I were to try to reconstruct the nation I would try to give at least $200 to each African American that did not have any money. I would do this because when they were former slaves they did not get payed. Also in Atlanta I would build back the schools, houses, hospitals, and offices. I would build many parks and fun places to be.
ReplyDelete- Katie Mae Sigal
I would give everybody that needs money money and try to build places that the union does not have.
ReplyDelete-lilly
I would create a group called the New Ways of Life (NWoL). They would give supplies to recently freed slaves. And since the U.S.A had just reunited, the North could spread their business and it would give jobs to the new free people. Also NWoL would build better homes for slaves, and, they would make agreements with slave owners that let slaves take half of their property and then they share it with other recently new freed slaves. Also we would go plantation by plantation making sure there are no slaves working and if there were, we would tell the Government and the slaves would be free. And if there might be need for any riots, Protests, or other things with slight violence we would join in.
ReplyDeleteRODRIGO
I would invent new things such as ways to get around, new groups, and build houses for the slaves. I also would add a new amendment stating NO SLAVES!!!!!!!
ReplyDelete~Mia Otoski~
Following the Civil War, the United States of America was divided and needed to be united. While tensions ceased after the Union victory, and further disagreements between the North and South were no longer as frequent, the country was still in a state of disrepair. The government was in need of a new plan to fix America.
ReplyDeleteIf I could write a new constitution, I would start over fresh. Instead of trying to build around what was already written, I would simply start over and write a new constitution, keeping in a few key points from the previous constitution. In an effort to rebuild the nation, I would strictly make sure that nobody from opposing sides was continuing to verbally or physically attack each other. In addition to prevent conspiracies or another war, I would do what Lincoln suggested and restrict Confederate states from joining America again unless they swore loyalty to the Union.
In regards to slavery, I would pretty much support the 13th amendment. The United States was, and still is, no place for slavery or racial prejudice. It is supposed to be a country with equal rights for all people (although further equality would come later, after the Reconstruction period). However, seeing as making slavery illegal would force a change of lifestyle and create more problems within the country, I would not immediately adopt the 13th amendment. I would first start with the most important laws, such as ones in which all slaves must be paid at least minimum wage, be provided housing, and recieve ample food. Slaves would also be able to leave work. As time went on, I would slowly improve the living conditions of workers - no longer slaves - until there was equality for all American citizens.
~ Anonymous
In addition, I would focus on the reconstruction of railroads due to the importance of them in the United States economy. Railroads were significant to the economy in southern states due to the mass production of cotton because of the invention of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney. Hospitals would also be important to rebuild because a recovering nation needs to care for and help its citizens too. Therefore, rebuilding America relied on physical location being reconstructed also, not just political ideas.
Delete~Anonymous
I would do something like Lincoln's plans and I would help freed slaves that did not know what to do and I would open schools and I would help them build houses. If they need food and water I would help them get it.
ReplyDeleteSierra:)
After the civil war I would help freed slaves by providing their financial and medical needs. I wouldn't just support the 13th Amendment, I would support the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments. I would also allow the Southerners to run for political government, but they have to take an oath that they will follow the constitution. I also would have the southern states ratify the 13th amendment to join the Union, just like President Abraham Lincoln did. I would have also made should that "Black Codes" did't come to effect.
ReplyDelete- Isabella Luz
I would first make railroads so we could get supplies one place to another. Then i would rebuild property that was distroyed in war (including new properties for freed slaves to live in). Last I would make every body take down the confedrate flag and put the original American Flag up, becuase the confederate flag did not have much of puorpose other than looking cool, on the other hand the American Flag shows that all states are equal.

If I were to rebuild the country after the civil war, I would do some similar things that were actually done. I would create amendments to the constitution (but not rewrite it) so that everybody is treated equally. I would also place Union soldiers to ensure southerners were following orders. I would NOT separate the south into 5 districts, though. I would try to impeach Johnson earlier, though. Did ANYBODY notice that in the textbook, Johnson fired a member of his staff who would've potentially been in favor of impeaching him? Did everybody also notice that congress failed to impeach Johnson by ONE VOTE?!?!??!?!!? Do you know what that means? What I would do if I were rebuilding the South is I would move all of the people from the South to the North and then I would rebuild new homes and make great churches and places for people to enjoy. I would also host a huge party for 2 reasons the first reason is that the nation is together again and the second reason is the slaves were free. And then I would move all of the southerners back into the south and thats how I would rebuild the South.

If i were rebuilding the south i would make a fundraiser type thing to help the people who didn't have homes to have a temporary home so that they could live there and not live outside in the weather and could get sick or die. Also I would make one for the slaves so that if there is a person who owned a slave they could have the slave not be harmed. And finally there wouldn't be any people owning slaves because it is illegal so the African Americans would have homes not SLAVES!

About 100,000 slaves were transported from Africa. That is almost as much people back then! You'd need about 75,000 jobs (not including children). That is just crazy. Having 75,000 jobs is expensive. This would take almost as much money as they had back then!
Sorry to ruin it, but Reconstruction was much harder than you think it is. Wouldn't they give jobs to them if they could?

I think that the Civil war wax museum was extremely awesome. I love the idea and I think it was great, thank Ms. Hall and some parents. But I had few problems with some rude and nonconsiderate students. My main problem that really affected me was that a group of kids came and started insulting me and then KICKED ME IN THE SHIN which really hurt and then I said my speech about 7 times to that group and in the middle of my 8th they left to torture someone else. But the rest of the Kids just left in the middle of my speech. I understand them leaving because they can get really bored, I remembered when I was in 3rd grade I think i skipped a few. But the rest was really good because we got to teach younger kids for 5th grade and all the work behind that was fun but a little time consuming. But in the museum some guys didn't have theirs memorized which Kinda embarrassed me. Also the parents and teachers really appreciated us. It was a wonderful idea.
